There are many links herein provided to other chigger sites. They are provided for your information and some times entertainment. This Chigger site does not necessarily endorse nor condone some or even much of the information that may be found on these sites. 

Some is very factually correct and some, maybe even much of it is blatantly in accurate, especially when it comes to treatment advice. As stated else where on this site, many things will give temporary relief. Many things are harmless. Many things are not harmless. Many things gives no relief at all. You are given the advantage of my many trials and errors when it comes to getting relief from "chigger bites".

Below are some quick points of reference, if you do not like to read but want a general overview. However, just about everything is a condensed version of anything you will read.

It is my intent to provide you with accurate information and encourage you, dear chigger suffer, to always be aware of your health and preserve it. Knowledge is the only way to do that. Not just knowledge, but correct and accurate knowledge.

Remember, bad knowledge is as good as no knowledge and sometimes even worse.

What do Chiggers look like?

  • Chigger Larvae range in size from about 1/120 to 1/150 of an inch diameter(you probably cannot see them at this stage)
  • Larvae are slightly yellow or amber-before they have lunch
  • Adult Chiggers are about 1/20 of an inch long
  • Adult Chiggers are usually red i.e. red bug

Where do chiggers hide?

  • wooded areas
  • grassy areas
  • leafy areas
  • warm areas
  • moist areas
  • parks
  • golf courses
  • picnic areas
  • any place rodents or mammals are prone to hide or live
  • along streams, rivers, lakes and ponds
  • just about anywhere that is dark around any of the above places (think about those warm, moist, dark, soft and tight places on your body)

How do you control chiggers?

  • naturally
  • chemically
  • carefully
  • avoidance

What are some repellents?

  • DEET also known as OFF and other repellents (not on the skin, not recommended)
  • found in most commercial repellents in varying strengths
  • citronella essential oil
  • garlic/water spray
  • pet tick/flea spray/repellent (not for use on skin and not recommended)

What causes the itching?

What are some of the things used that do not stop chigger itch?

  • scratching
  • finger nail polish
  • kerosene
  • gasoline
  • alcohol
  • commercial anti itch creams/hydrocortisone
  • hair spray
  • paint thinner
  • bleach
  • calamine lotion

Does a chigger suck blood?

  • No
  • Chiggers bite and eat, not drink
  • Chiggers prefer hosts other than human
  • women and children are most vulnerable

How long does the chigger itch last?

  • until it stops
  • from 7 - 14 days
  • scratching can reignite the itching

What areas of the body are chiggers most likely to attack?

  • around tight places like:
  • sock tops
  • waistline
  • bra line
  • under the breast
  • under the arms-arm pits (females like this area)
  • around the ankles
  • behind the knees
  • around the groin (males like this area)
  • remember, warm, dark, moist, tight

When are chiggers most active?

  • at temperatures above 70 degrees F.
  • in the late spring and early summer
  • to first hard freeze
  • most prevalent in the southeastern part of the United States

What do Chigger Bites look like? (not recommended for the weak of stomach)

What do Chiggers normally feed on?

  • birds
  • dogs
  • cats
  • mice
  • squirrels
  • rodents
  • reptiles
  • insects
  • humans (not prefered host)

Do chiggers carry disease?

  • US chiggers are not known to carry disease
  • some foreign chiggers are reported to care some diseases
  • secondary infections from scratching can be serious
  • severe cases could require hostpitalization

Is there a way to stop the dreadful itching?
